this is what i do & i love it

today i worked with a 4 year old autistic boy - D

he doesn't talk (think about that for a second), the same way you or I or the average 4 year old does

he's also afraid of "strangers"getting into his bubble/personal space

to the extent, that he kicks & runs away - frightened

he's being taught how to point & say the sound to what he's pointing at

today, i worked on teaching him how to associate a picture with an object eg: pic of chip = chips

this is called PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)

we cut out a picture of a chip, placed it on the table. if he wanted a chip, he had to pick up the picture & hand it to me, then i would immediately give him a chip & say "chips"

a simple "ch" "tut tut" "shhh" "sssss" is deserving of an applause

we started out the day with D being too afraid to look at me

we ended it off with him not only looking at me, but actually interacting in his own little way

i left that house feeling like I'D been taught so much. so, very much.

what do i do?

i learn life's most important lessons from the worlds greatest minds
